Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially aware and taught her to utilize the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and brought up. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was in college when she started to get attracted to the field of production for broadcast journalism. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash in the house that belonged to a member of jury. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
